In many cultures, the number seven has symbolic meaning. We see the number in nature, mythology, Biblical passages and in games of chance. For the Codorníu Raventós family, Bodegas Septima could be considered “Lucky Number Seven.”  After all, it is their seventh winery. But that title would be a bit of a misnomer. Luck has little to do with it. Instead, it is years of education and experience, a carefully chosen location, and a commitment to sustainability that sets it apart.

Located in the Agrelo region of Mendoza,  Bodegas Septima’s vineyards are irrigated by melting snowfall, protected by cover-crop, and pruned to reduce yield. Winemaker Paula Borgo was reared in Mendoza, immersed in the wine culture.  With degrees in winemaking and enology, and experience making wine around the world, Borgo has developed a philosophy which centers on authentic and sustainable practices. Her goal is to build an identity for each wine they create, aiming for “perfection when it comes to expressing what we have in our vineyards.”

The Obra wines are their reserves: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. Obra means “work of art” and that is reflected in the process and the product. To create the 2014 Septima Obra Malbec ($25), harvests from the Uco Valley and Agrelo are micro-vinified and aged 10-12 months before blending.

This 100% Malbec is rich in the glass. Deepest violet with a nose of blackberries, dusty and warm. It is spicy, playful. Just before it hits the palate, notes of dill and clove. Bursting with blackberry, black plum, hints of cocoa nibs and violet. It is chewy, weighted but elegant. Paired with grilled ribeye, it stood and softened. A pleasure to drink.

The press materials which accompanied the sample reference the Numerology connection to the number seven. It states that “the number 7 represents the seeker, the thinker, and the eternal search for knowledge.” It seems an accurate allusion to their philosophy and winemaker. And with Paula Borgo at the helm, I’d say Bodegas Septima and the Codorníu Raventós family are probably feeling lucky.
