Napa has Stag’s Leap which brings to mind images of strength and grace. Rutherford is the home of Frog’s Leap, a moniker chosen as John Williams leapt out on his own from the aforementioned winery. We’ve all seen a frog leap. Here in the Texas Hill Country, we have Armadillo’s Leap. You’ve never seen an armadillo leap? You’re not alone. But, while the image may not be familiar, the winemaker is.
Pedernales Cellars has been internationally recognized for their production of Texas wines. From Viognier to Tempranillo, the Kuhlken-Osterberg family is committed to using Texas fruit to produce first-class wines. But sometimes, even their winemaker David Kuhlken likes to kick back, to try something new. As an outlet for exploration and creativity, Armadillo’s Leap was born.
Located on 290 just east of Fredericksburg, the tasting room is warm and rustic. A patio opens to views of the hill country and miniature horses. New grape varieties, blends, even some fruit from other states. Sparkling Moscato and Mimosa Mornings, blends given TLAs (three-letter acronyms) like BFF, OMG, and WTF, this is a place to sit back and enjoy your friends. But don’t let their relaxed names fool you, they are still serious about making good wine and giving back to the community.
Open every day 11-6
A Full Flight Tasting is $10 and includes 6 wines and an etched crystal stemware.
Current Tasting Room Wines:
Sparkling Moscato-Lively and fresh bubbles made in Charmant style. Nice balance or sugar and acid make this easy to drink with a nice finish.
2013 Viognier- Citrus and stone fruit, balanced fruit and acid, floral and fresh.
2013 Viognier-Roussanne Blend-The addition of Roussanne adds to the weight and depth of flavor: apricot, tropical, zesty yet round. A fantastic Thanksgiving wine.
Texas Mourvedre-Red fruit, acid, spice, and everything nice. A favorite for Texas and Armadillo’s Leap.
2012 BFF Blend- This year’s blend was Montepulciano, Tempranillo, and Aglianico. The BFF on the label might mean Big Fantastic Fruit and also would be perfect to share with your BFF at the grill.
Muscat Dessert Wine – Did not sample
