The storms rolled through late last night making for uneasy rest. The clouds continue to hang low after dropping grapefruit size hail west of Austin. While the potential damage is disconcerting, I still find comfort in the storms. We often sit on the front porch, watching, waiting, shouting over the wind and wails. The sun will shine again shortly; it always does here. In the meantime, I opened a little sunshine in a glass.
Vionta Albariño ($15) hails from the Rias Baixas in Spain, a Denominación de Origen in Galicia, Spain. There were challenges in the 2014 growing season, the moisture and weather patterns kept the growers on their toes. But fewer bunches means low yield which often translates to an intensity of flavor. A pale lemon-green, a nose of green mango and plantains, daffodils. Lively acid balanced by fun tropical fruits and floral notes. The finish softens and keeps you coming back for more. I paired this with a Chicken Caesar Salad. It can be tough pairing with the garlic but this worked.
Head east and you will find Rueda in the Community of Castile and León. A more continental climate, the white grape of choice is Verdejo. The 2014 harvest was predictable with healthy yields. Paramus Verdejo ($16) is rounded out with 15% Viura (Macabeo) and together they make a lovely, easy sipper. Pale green pear on the nose and in the glass, add notes of lime leaf and white flowers on the nose and palate. Weighty without being heavy, this fuller body wine is zesty and a pleasure to drink.
Our forecast this week calls for more rain followed by temperatures creeping into the 90s. I am not ready for summer, but with these Spanish beauties, my glass will be.

If you can find any Sauvignon Blanc and SB blends from Rueda you will also be amazed! Only downside is I haven’t seen many in the US.

I love Albarino! One of my favorites for the warmer weather especially.
Texas is getting rain, it’s 80 here in Baltimore, and in the 60s in California…I feel like the Apocalypse is coming on.

Just stumbled upon Albariño myself and can’t wait till warmer spring (which in OK just like in TX is now 😉) to open another bottle! Glad you survived the hail.

I so agree, two days ago we enjoyed a wonderful Martin Codax Albarino from Rias Baixas, and may I say that your writing is always sunshine.

We have had a lot of rain too. Love the always much needed rain, wish it came without destruction. Both wines sound perfect for our Texas summers!
